Description

Cosmetic box and cover with chrysanthemum design. Stoneware, moulded, with parts attached, inlaid in black and white slip, and celadon glazed. This box has a flat cover with bevelled edge; the interior is divided into four compartments, the base is recessed. The design is inlaid in black and white slip and shows a chrysanthemum spray medallion on the cover reserved in a white six-pointed star and surrounded by black scroll motifs; the sides of both box and cover have key-fret borders inlaid in black slip. The pale bluish-green jade-like glaze is evenly applied and has a subtle gloss. The internal partition has a firing crack, and the glaze on the lower part of the box has discoloured. There are traces of fire-clay supports on the unglazed rims of both parts and three quartzite spur-marks on the base.
