Description

Vase with willow trees, cranes and lotus design. Stoneware, thrown, inlaid in black and white slip, and celadon glazed. This maebyong-shaped vase has a wide shoulder and a narrow base and rests on a broad low footring. The neck has been restored. The body is inlaid in black and white slip with two large lotus sprays with fully opened blooms, between painterly scenes of cranes under a willow tree. Around the base is a band of key-fret in white slip. The glaze is of opaque pale bluish-green tone, glossy, and with a fine crackle. The glaze has been wiped from the footring, which shows traces of ten fire-clay spurs.
