Pottery: Unknown
Dragon jar. Porcelain, thrown, painted in cobalt-blue and glazed. This jar has a tall neck and bulbous shoulder and gradually tapers towards the base. Bands of youi-heads in underglaze blue decorate shoulder and foot, and the main part of the body is painted with two four-clawed dragons with staring eyes and sharp teeth chasing a flaming pearl. They are painted in a lively manner, even down to the scales of their bodies. The milky-white glaze has a tinge of pale blue, and a dark-stained crackle. A considerable amount of sand from the firing support has adhered to the base.

This piece has the typical form of large jars (hangari) in the later part of the eighteenth century. It was presumably made in the Punwon-ri kilns (which were active from 1752 to 1910). This type of dragon jar, yongjonhang, originally with a cover, was used as a wine container at palace feasts and ancestral ceremonies (see Seoul, Ewha Womans University Museum, 1985, p.100, figs.1-2; and Sekai Toji Zenshu, vol.19, 1980, pl.174, for a related jar with landscape design in the Seoul National Museum).
