T'ojuhang
Pottery: Unknown
Ten-sided jar with roundels. Porcelain, thrown, shaped, painted in copper-red and glazed. The wide mouth has a rolled rim, the body is ten-sided around the centre, and the foot is low. The sides are decorated with four overlapping double roundels in underglaze copper-red, enclosing simplified representations of birds and clouds, and at the shoulder are four sets of stylised pendant lotus petals in graded lengths. The glaze has a greenish-grey tone with a slight blue tinge, and is evenly applied. The footring and base show traces of a coarse sandy support.

This type of multi-faceted red-painted vessel was made in provincial kilns from the second half of the eighteenth to the nineteenth century. It is known as t'ojuhang and would have been used to hold ceremonial rice cakes that were offered to the earth spirits. The red colour was believed to avert evil. A jar from the Ataka Collection, with this design but unfacetted, is illustrated in Sekai Toji Zenshu, vol.19, 1980, pl.201.
