Description

Box with birds and lotus scrolls. Lacquer on wooden core, inlaid with mother of pearl, with metal fittings. This shallow rectangular box has a hinged cover. The cover is inlaid in mother of pearl with a lotus scroll with eight blooms arranged in two parallel rows, and with two small birds in flight, and the sides are decorated with smaller lotus scrolls. The corners are protected by metal fittings and the sides have matching hinges and a lock. The lacquer of the exterior is black and that of the interior red.

Note

This box may have been used for writing utensils. This lotus motif frequently appears in artefacts of the Choson dynasty. The fittings, which are highly unusual, may of course have been added later.
