Silver, parcel-gilt and niello, circular; the lid nielloed with a map of northern Russia
Silver, parcel-gilt and niello, circular with an almost flat pull-off lid. The gilt lid is nielloed with a map of north Russia, including east Siberia and the Baring Straights. "Northern Ocean" is inscribed in Cyrillic along with the names of various towns and rivers and the degrees longitude. The base of the box is similarly decorated but with a map of north-east Siberia. The sides of the box depict the people of Siberia, their homes, boats, slays, etc. The sides of the lid are nielloed with the rivers and their names. The interior of the box is gilt.
