Description

Stoneware, with carved vertical grooves, blue wash bands, and grey-green ash-glaze; lower part, rim, and edge of cover unglazed; four patch marks on base

Buff stoneware, appearing pale brown on exterior where visible, thrown, with carved grooves, blue wash bands, and grey-green ash glaze. The rim, lower part, and rim of the cover are unglazed, and there are four patch marks on the bottom. The pot has a bulbous body, an upward tilting funnel-shaped spout, with numerous holes in the wall behind it, and an applied strap handle with a longitudinal ridge, two depressions at the top, and one at the bottom. There are slightly raised horizontal bands above the handle and level with its lower end, and on each side of the body three vertical grooves. The cover has a wide rim, and a deep bowl-shaped depression with a steam hole, and in the centre a cylindrical knob with a low conical top. The glaze has pooled around it, and crazed slightly.
