Silver with applied, engraved and punched decoration, set with a medallion

Silver with applied, engraved and punched decoration, set with a portrait medallion. Circular bowl with shallow curved sides and cast loop handle; the base set with a double portrait medallion of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. The interior has an applied border of fleur-de-lis and punched pellets. On the base is a rope edged border which acts as a foot, above this the sides of the bowl are decorated with six applied vines alternating with symbols of wine making, including a jug, basket for grapes, tools and a barrel. Opposite the handle and beneath the barrel is engraved a swag of scrolling vine leaves and grapes. The loop handle is applied to the rim at right-angles to the body and is formed of two entwined snakes engraved with a diaper-work pattern of scales. The legends on the medallion are: on the obverse ‘LUD. XVI. FR. ET. NAV. REX * MAR. ANT. AUSTR. REG., and the signature ‘B. DU VIVIER’ for Pierre-Simon-Benjamin du Vivier; and on the reverse, which depicts a dolphin with a fleet of ships in the background, ‘ASSERENDI NOVA SPES COMMERCII’; and beneath is ‘REGI DE ORTU S.S. DELPINI / SEX MERCATOR. PARIS. ORDINES / GRATULANTUR / AUSP. DUCIS DE COSSÉ / URBIS GUB. DIE IV NOV. / MDCCLXXI’, The rim, to the right of the handle, is inscribed ‘E.F. de Darfort 1783’
