Three-quarter length seated to right, facing the front with eyes to upper left, his right hand down by his side holding a quill pen, his left hand touching his chin, the elbow leaning on a table with anatomy books open on a page illustrated with diagrams of skulls, a bell jar and other objects; the lower legs and feet of a skeleton behind to right
