Design for bookplate: Bevis Hillier
Draughtsman: Hassall, Joan
A honeycomb pattern of ten segments, three over four, over three. Each segment contains an image alluding to Bevis Hillier's life. Upper row, left to right: Magdalen College, Oxford, the British Museum and Reigate; bottom row, left to right: a porcelain tea pot, the figure from John Hillier's 'Skegness is SO Bracing' poster and a Times newspaper. The middle row features Hillier's name, as well as a bee, kitsch jugs and a sun. The design was never engraved: Hillier met Hassall to talk about her father, John Hillier, for his book on 'Posters'. Hassall talked frankly about her father's alcoholsm, but did not approve when this account was included in the published book.
