Description

Tile from calligraphic frieze or hizam. In group of four (C.3-6-X). Pinkish-buff earthenware, the upper surface covered with a black, lustrous glaze through which the background of the design has been cut away to reveal the bare body, leaving the glazed design in relief. Approximately square. A Nashki inscription continues over three tiles; the fourth tile may be an odd one.

Similar friezes are in the Dar al-Batha Museum, the Madrash al Bu'naniyah, Madrash Bin Yusuf and Madrash al'Attarin all in Fez; the Jami'Sidi Bin Nasr in Tetuan; the adrash Abul Hasan al-Marini in Sale; the Dar al-Glawi in Marrakesh; the Dar al-Qasbah Museum in Tangiers. A tile from Sale is in the Louvre. A frieze in situ is at the Mausoleum of the Sultans of the Sa'adian Dynasty, Marrakesh. The inscription on this group of tiles is not the same as that on the Fitzwilliam's, which appears to have one or more tiles missing.
