History note: Bequeathed by the artist to his niece, Jeanne Fèvre (according to a label on the stretcher); her sale, Galerie Jean Charpentier, Paris, 12 June 1934, no. 141, as Vue d'un couvent aux environs de Rome, effet de soir (sold for 1,000 FF); private collection, Paris, (bought at the Fèvre sale); David-Weill (label D W 34/36 on stretcher and D.WL.6 on frame); by descent to his granddaughter; with Hazlitt, Gooden and Fox, from whom purchased.
From the Gow, Cunliffe and Perceval Funds, with contributions from the National Art-Collections Fund and the Museums and Galleries Commission/Victoria and Albert Purchase Grant Fund.
