Description

A watercolour drawing from the album 4171. This image depicts a male Temminck's tragopan (Tragopan temminckii) perched on a gnarled branch. The bird displays the species' characteristic spectacular plumage with a striking combination of rich reddish-orange and deep blue coloration. The head and neck feature brilliant orange-red feathering contrasted by an iridescent blue-black face and throat, while the body shows the distinctive scaled patterning typical of tragopans, with blue and white spotting across the darker reddish-brown wings and back. The painting demonstrates the fine brushwork characteristic of Chinese export art from the late 18th or early 19th century, combining ornithological documentation and traditional Chinese flower-and-bird painting style.
