Description

Steel with etched decoration. Tall blade, the central ridge flanked by two shallow grooves, at the base two upward curved wings with scrolled edges; the socket formed as three non conforming octagons; the langets have been cut off. The etched decoration on one side comprises a winged, helmeted female figure, the right hand holding a spear and a flail-like weapon, the spear having a pennon inscribed 'VELOCITER', the left arm carrying an oval shield bearing the arms and crest of the Wrangel family and, at the top, the initials 'C G W' for Carl Gustav Wrangel. Above the arched frame surrounding the figure is the name 'BELLONA'. On the other side, a similar though wingless figure also holds a spear, the pennon inscribed 'PRUNDENTER'. Above the panel is the name 'PALLAS' and below, the initials 'C.G.W.'. The wings are etched with groups of armour and weapons and, in the centre, on the Pallas side, an oval cartouche bearing a figure of Ganymede borne aloft by Jove's eagle, a scroll above being inscribed 'NON EST MORTALE QUOD OPTO'; a similar oval on the other side shows an arm issuing from clouds, the hand holding a flowering branch, the scroll above inscribed 'SIC INSPERATA REDITIBIT'. On one of the wings is a pelta-shaped shield charged with stars and crescents.
