Note

Adi Toch writes of her creations: 'My work invites the observer to touch, play and discover hidden spaces and unexpected motion.' This bowl belongs to her Tactile Series 'designed to contain substances which attract attention through their sensory qualities but cannot be retrieved. Handling the vessels triggers the senses by their smooth surface as well as by the sound and fluidity of the particles held inside.'

Text from object entry in A. Game (2016) ‘Contemporary British Crafts: The Goodison Gift to the Fitzwilliam Museum’. London: Philip Wilson Publishers: Adi Toch studied at the Bezalel Art Academy in Jerusalem followed by an MA at The Cass, London Metropolitan University. She established her own studio in London in 2009 and came to early notice through her ability to create poetic forms in metal which explore the history and qualities of the vessel form. This work is part of a series of bowls which investigated experimental colouring techniques using a liquid compound of ammonia that creates rich tones on the surface of the metal: each application producing a unique effect. Toch describes bowls of this form as an exploration of the tension between symmetry and dissonance and of the theme of containment: the ball bearings inside cannot escape. She teaches part time in both London and Jerusalem and has work in a growing number of public collections: this work was her first to be collected for a museum. Adi Toch: ‘The practice of making vessels and containers fascinates me as it enables me to work both with metal and space as materials, redefining borders between inside and outside.’
