Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue and yellow

Cream earthenware, tin-glazed white on the uper surface and painted in blue and yellow. The tiles are square with bevelled edges, and are decorated with different designs. A has a quarter of a four-tile design with an octagonal motif. B has a quarter of a four -tile design with a circular motif. Both tiles have traces of plaster or mortar on the back


History note: Found in a deserted monastery in South West Portugal about 1884-5 by Dr Hans Gadow, MA, FRS (1855-1928); Mrs Hans Gadow (b. 1861, née Clara Maud Paget); possibly given in 1937 or 1942 when she gave other items to the Fitzwilliam Museum
