Description

Verge watch with seconds and sun and moon dial, in silver pair case.

MOVEMENT: Full plate movement engraved 'L. Richards London'. Balance cock with pierced and engraved table and foot, foot with free form edge, table with wings. Pierced and engraved slide plate, irregular edge, silver regulation disc with Arabic figures, 1 to 6. Top plate engraved as above. Pierced fusee iron post, one side cut off to miss pillar. Rectangular potance with small foot, and counter-potance riveted to top plate. Case bolt, flat filigree foot removed to miss brass edge foot. Nib through dial. Pillar plate with four tulip pillars. Third wheel bar. Joint riveted to plate. Split fusee and chain, tangent set-up under barrel, barrel with one lip only. Verge escapement. Train planted clockwise.

BRASS EDGE: Engraved around dial sink, centre removed for sun and moon disc.

DIAL: Silver champleve, four feet. 5 minute figure on cushions, ladder minute ring, radial Roman chapters over semi-circle cut-out at top with chamfered edge with hour lines and half-hour arrow marks. Seconds ring below centre. Applied silver seconds ring with radial Arabic 5 seconds figures and ladder seconds ring. Centre of seconds ring with two cartouches. the top engraved 'Ri' over 'chards', the lower one 'London'. Stylised foliage below hour sector and around seconds ring. Central blued steel disc with inset silver moon, gold sun, and plain steel clouds and stars, scratched on back 'ShQ/'. Low relief in pale lemon yellow, perhaps coloured, or lacquer (shellac?).

HANDS: Blued steel, waved minute hand and small seconds hand with brass bush.

INNER CASE: Plain silver body and split bezel, winding hole in body. Inside of the body stamped 'VB' conjoined. Scratch marks '4191' and 'U/-/-'. 'AD1648 5 (reversed) m' and '366'. Pendant oval on round pod, plain bow

OUTER CASE (A): Plain silver. Steel catch extending into base. Base probably previously lined.

WATCH PAPER: Hand cut with vee cuts thick white paper with hand written on it. 'Early specimen having a seconds hand L. Richard free 1648'
