In the late 1820s, David d’Angers began a project executing portraits of the leading men and women of his time in the form of medallions, such as the present example, and busts. David produced over 500 medallions for his portrait pantheon, mostly large-scale, with the sitter shown in profile. The Musée Carnavalet, Paris, has 352 medallions by David from this series, including an example of the present one (no. S285).
