Description

Creamware painted in red and black enamels with a lady beside a tomb, inscribed 'Solitude/is my/Choice'

Dark cream-coloured earthenware, with applied handle and moulded spout, knob, and terminals, and rouletted borders, lead-glazed, and painted in blue, green, yellow, red and black enamels. The cylindrical body has horizontal bands of rope-like rouletting round the base, shoulder and neck. The spout is moulded in relief with a sprays of foliage and with leaves round its junction with the body. Inside there are seven pierced holes to emit the tea. The two entwined double twist handles have flower and leaf terminals. The domed cover has a ventilation hole, and a band of rouletting round the edge. The applied knob is in the shape of a convolvulus flower with a small flower head and leaf terminal behind it, and a leaf with small flowers in front of it. One side of the pot is decorated in black and red with a bird flying towards a lady seated pensively beside a tomb on which are the words 'Solitude/is my/Choice' , On the other side there are Italianate buildings in a landscape with two trees. The shoulder has four sprays of stylized flowers and foliage. The termals of the handle are painted in blue, green, and yellow. The cover is decorated with similar buildings and schematic flying birds. The knob and its terminals are painted to match those on the handle.
