Note

Anthony Bryant (b.1960 ) lives in West Cornwall. He is internationally recognised for his work in 'green' woodturning and also paints vibrantly coloured abstracts. He stretches the potential of the wood to its limits, producing works which are unusually large and thin for the materials he chooses. He says: ‘I am not concerned with function in my work. Instead, I prefer to explore the sculptural potential of the vessel at the physical limits of woodturning. My driving aim is to create powerful forms with poise and presence’.

Text from object entry in A. Game (2016) ‘Contemporary British Crafts: The Goodison Gift to the Fitzwilliam Museum’. London: Philip Wilson Publishers: Anthony Bryant began his experiments with woodturning when still at school, after discovering a nineteenth-century treadle in his father’s workshop. Following a short-lived career in banking, he took a course with woodturner Mike Law in North Cornwall before establishing his own woodturning studio in 1980. For the past thirty years or so, Bryant has developed a unique body of sculptural vessel forms, turning wood when green and working with the natural drying processes to create the final form. His mastery of this particular technique has led to an international programme of exhibitions and collections and he continues to work from his home in West Cornwall.
