Sheila Fournier (1930-2000) studied ceramics while training as a teacher at Goldsmiths College. Based first at Castle Hill in Kent and from 1971 at Lacock Pottery, Wiltshire, she produced tableware with her husband, the ceramicist Robert Fournier (1915-2008), whilst also making individual pieces, mainly in oxidized stoneware and porcelain. She is best known for her more delicate porcelain pieces with shapes and decorative motifs reminiscent of Art Nouveau, of which this and C.16-1977 are good examples. Her other work includes hand-built stoneware bowls that suggest an organic origin with layered petal-like forms, an example being C.29-1981. She retired from potting in 1987.
Sheila and Robert Fournier made a number of films, including: ‘David Leach’ and ‘Raku, English Style’. They completed several literary ventures together and set up the archive of the Craft Potters Association, now part of the Ceramic Archive at Aberystwyth.
