Description

A quarto valentine of lace-paper with gilded border and lace-paper overlaid around a central panel of white silk with mounted, collaged elements. A circular 'medal' edged with white, silk leaves, printed motto: 'TRUE SYMPATHY KNOWS NO EXHAUSTION' and central, painted 'enamelled' interior of red, gilt and silver paint and cut-paper forget-me-nots hangs on a pink ribbon with circular silvered paper 'pin'. The 'medal' lifts up to reveal a 'Dobbs' handwritten message: 'A token of constant / Love'. Written onto the silk above is a 'Dobbs' handwritten motto in blue ink: 'Affection's / Offering / To be worn / near the Heart'. A collage of cut-paper, hand-coloured and embossed flowers with hand-painted leaves onto the silk has been mounted with unpasted ends to left and right intended for 'secret' messages which either Dobbs or possibly the sender has added in pen and black ink: 'From your / sincere / and / devoted / admirer'. See also no. 80 in this album, another example of the same design with slight differences in colour-way and additional collaged elements. Both examples feature the same mottos at upper centre, around the 'medal' and also beneath it.
