Valentine card
Valentine of embossed, lace-paper with embossed details of tasselled curtains, doves, fruit and flowers. A central silvered embossed paper frame with applied sprigs of real moss. Inside is a cut-paper embossed and silvered female figure standing in a silvered scallop shell against a cream paper background. A lozenge with gilded frame affixed at lower centre contains a printed verse: 'Loves dwells amidst / The starry sky, / And breathes on earth / In every sigh.' A roughly-cut, loose purple slip paper appears to be a later addition. The interior of the card is blank. A diamond mark embossed onto the paper at upper left gives the date the design was registered as 4th September, 1854.
