Description

Loose within album P.14347-R. A hand-coloured lithograph on 4to-sized wove paper. A decorative border of stylised flowers, leaves and stalks encloses a printed verse: "Soft as the summer's soothing gale, / Evolving sweets from hill and dale, …". The title: SECRET / OF / LOVE, is printed above in stylised letters with three cupids/putti on clouds hanging a string of hearts. A dove carrying a letter in its beak is seen at upper right. A hand-colouring palette of yellow, coral pink and orange is used. The inside pages are blank. The Museum of London holds the same example, but with a different hand-colouring palette of yellow, coral pink, pale aqua and mid-blue. See 34.170/1099. It is dated 1860-1880.
