The Parting
Printmaker: Gilks, Edward (Attributed)
Design for a valentine on a small sheet of white laid paper with a lithograph of an embracing couple sitting below a tree, cut out and affixed at upper centre. The male figure wears a suit of armour. A title at lower left: "The Parting". The lithograph is almost certainly by Edward Gilks, as P.14348-R-17 is mounted as a group in the same album with other valentine designs signed by Gilks. A verse in faded ink is written below: "Fragrant and moist as a dew-drinking flower / on thy lips, my love! / Sweet is thy breath as the nectarine …". An inscription in ink (same hand as verse) at upper right corner: "46†".
