Charles Vyse (1882-1971) came from a family of potters and was apprenticed at age 14 to Doulton, at Burslem. There he was encouraged to study at Hanley School of Art, and later won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art. In 1919, he set up a studio pottery at Cheyne Walk, Chelsea (close to Harry Parr’s studio pottery, which opened the previous year). His wife Nell, a suffragette and singer, carried out some of the modelling and decoration whilst Charles concentrated on mould making and firing. They specialised in finely modelled figurines os ordinary Londoners, employing a number of women to produce them. They also experimented successfully with iron oxide glazes to mimic those found on ancient Chinese ware for vases and other products.
