Description

Lokopala (tomb guardian) on a raised base. White earthenware, moulded, partially lead-glazed in green, yellow and tan, cold painted details and traces of red pigment. The figure stands with its right leg slightly forward. Its right arm is raised and fist clenched, whilst the left hand rests on its hip. The figure's hair is in a bun on top of the head. There are traces of red pigment on the hair and face, around the eyes, nose and mouth. Hollow.

History note: Purchased from Foster 1922, by Henry Scipio Reitlinger (d.1950) for £3.10s.0d; the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
