Description

Ovoid lobed bottle. Light stoneware, thrown, carved, and resist decorated with iron oxide. The oval lobed body, long neck and flared lip are decorated in dark-brown with cream leaves and flowers on two sides of the body, and with a scholar wearing flowing robes and a lady wearing robes, holding a zither and book on the other sides. The neck of the bottle is decorated with shapes. The foot is slightly concave with flat, recessed base.

History note: Purchased from Foster, May 1923, for £1.0s.0d; Henry Scipio Reitlinger (d. 1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
