Description

Kuan jar and pierced wooden cover. Light buff stoneware, thrown, dark-brown glaze, carved and incised back to underglazed body. The wide-mouthed jar with vertical rim has high rounded shoulders tapering to a low foot and a slightly recessed, flat, unglazed base. The dark-brown glaze is spread unevenly round the mouth rim. The jar is decorated in sgraffito, which is more ornate on the front than the rear. The chocolate slip glaze is carved through with a band of scrolling peony decorating the shoulders and another band of scrolling peony below. A border of solid dark-brown glaze descends to the foot.
