Description

Large bottle. Dark-buff stoneware, thrown in sections, covered in white slip, and painted in iron-black under a clear glaze. The truncated vase has high, rounded shoulders, small neck and everted, uneven mouth rim mounted in copper. The body gently tapers towards the slightly recessed, flat base. The white slip and transparent glaze stop well short of the base. The shoulders are decorated with flowers and foliage in iron-black within a border, and the body is painted with flowers and scrolling foliage.

History note: Purchased from Dorn, June 1921, for £10.0s.0d; Henry Scipio Reitlinger (d. 1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
