Baluster vase. Hard-paste porcelain, decorated in underglaze-blue. The heavily potted vase has a cylindrical neck with applied lug handles below the rounded dish mouth. It has rounded shoulders, and the body tapers into a deep raised foot with flat, unglazed base. The vase is covered in a pale sea-green, celadon crackle glaze. The neck is painted with bamboo sprays either side of the lug handles, and flowering shrubs are painted on the body.
History note: Purchased from Sotheby's, 3 May 1935, Lot 11, for £1.0s.0d; Henry Scipio Reitlinger (d. 1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
