Baluster jar
Baluster jar. Hard-paste porcelain painted in underglaze blue. The jar has a short neck with everted rim painted brown, rounded shoulders tapering to a low foot and a flat, recessed, glazed base. The lower part of the footrim is unglazed. The central scene depicts a successful examination candidate returning home. He walks through a landscape past a gentleman and an attendant under a parasol, past another gentleman and attendant under a parasol towards a gentleman in a house. Around the shoulders are four floral vignettes reserved on a blue, trellis-pattern ground.
History note: H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
