Description

Eight lobed baluster jar. Hard-paste porcelain, moulded in eight lobes, and painted in underglaze blue. The jar, has a short neck, rounded, sloping shoulders tapering to the foot, and a flat, glazed, recessed base. A band of key-fret pattern decorates the neck, and the shoulders have a band of petal shaped lappets shaded in blue. The lobed body has an all-over design of tendrilled vine gourds with one tree rat, above a two-lined border. Above the foot is a band of petal-shaped lappets.

History note: Purchased from Sotheby's 27 October 1933, Reginald Le May Collection, for £1.10s.0d, part Lot 72; Henry Scipio Reitlinger (d. 1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
