Description

Large sheet of cream wove paper onto which valentine card components have been affixed to both sides. On the recto are large, chromolithographed scraps of exotic fruits, a butterfly and a half-length image of a girl with brown ringlets carrying a basket of flowers. On the verso, a white lace-paper frame containing a hand-coloured lithograph of a scene from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, (Act 3, scene 1; Titania makes love to Bottom wearing the head of a jackass) Titania's lines from the scene printed below as hand-written: 'I pray thee gentle mortal ...'. A hand-written inscription in graphite on the cream paper: 'Midsummer Nights Dream / Shakespeare'.
