Valentine card
Publisher: Mansell, Joseph
Embossed paper with gilded detailing; a design featuring a shepherdess with sheep, trees and flowers with some hand colouring. A central, oval-shaped window with a frame of embossed white roses and hand-painted leaves. The window is backed with a panel of pink net and a silver, embossed cupid on a cloud affixed to the interior leaf is seen through it. A hand-written inscription in blue ink above and below the central panel: "Constant to thee, / Be thou so to me". Inside the card there is a hand-written inscription in black ink: "To share thy joys to soothe thy care / with thee my every thought to share / with thee, in mutual love to live / is all I ask of Heaven to give. / ?L.S." A hand-written inscription in graphite on the album leaf below P.14344-R-13 states: "21 /= was paid for this valentine in 1925". The hand has been identified as belonging to Glaisher's friend, local Antiquarian, Catherine Parsons (1890-1956), who arranged and assembled his valentine albums in 1924. Her hand is seen elsewhere throughout album P.14344-R. Initials in graphite below are indecipherable. [ /= denotes shillings].
