Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
Lace-paper with an oval-shaped, silver lace-paper frame at the centre which contains a varnished, chromolithographed scrap of a bouquet of flowers. Two collages of cut-paper foliage and chromolithographed scraps of flower posies above and below the central panel. The posy at upper centre bears a motto on a scroll: "Constancy". The inside of the card is blank. On the album leaf below P.14344-R-22 and 23 is an inscription in graphite written in Catherine Parson's hand, which states: 'These five valentines were sent between the years 1859-63 by Dr. Glaisher's sister to her school friend Mrs Florence Wilson, who gave them, with other valentines, to Dr Glaisher for his collection in 1925.'. Other than possibly the two cards affixed to this leaf of the album (P.14344-R-22 and P.14344-R-23), it is diffcult to identify conclusively the 'five' cards named in this inscription. See also P.14397-R, which was taken from this album and is now loose. Catherine Parsons was a close friend of Glaisher, especially towards the end of his life, and undertook to mount and arrange his valentine collection into albums from the Autumn of 1924 through to the Summer of the following year and beyond. See letters from Glaisher to Parsons held at the Fitzwilliam Museum.
