Valentine card
Publisher: Dobbs, Henry
Lace-paper in a design of entwined shells, flowers and fronded foliage. The central window is backed with net and affixed to this is a collage of hand-coloured cut-outs of wood-engraved goldfinches, a cut-paper branch, leaves and pink roses, all hand-coloured with a piece of dried moss attached and a cut-paper nest painted in pale blue and brown gouache. A hand-written inscription/diagram from the interior leaf can be seen through the net: "Love's Sun Beams / (written along a series of watercolour/gouache depictions of rays of sun) Fondly I love thee / Longing to meet thee / Always happy in thy presence / To me the fairest flower / My heart is in thy keeping". A gold tinsel shape representing the sun is affixed above. DOBBS, KIDD & CO. blind-embossed on the recto at lower right. The firm of Henry Dobbs traded as Dobbs, Kidd & Co. from 1851 into the 1890s.
