Description

A large card with a fine lace-paper border and an interior hand-painted scalloped border in pink. A central panel contains a collaged swag of hand-coloured cut-paper foliage and flowers and gold-coloured paper foliage with additional foliage painted onto the paper. A silver, decorative cut-out of three lozenge shapes affixed above. Hand-written inscriptions in blue ink: "Oh, let me love / and loving you / I will be constant / kind and true" and in red ink: "Constancy". Further inscriptions in a different hand in black ink (presumably of the sender of the valentine) repeating the name: "James", five times. A watermark inside the card gives a partial date of "851" as the fourth digit is cropped, but presumably should read as 1851. MANSELL blind-embossed at lower left.
