To a Grinder Valentine card
Publisher: Lloyd, Edward (publisher)
Comic valentine entitled above the image: TO A GRINDER. A hand-coloured woodcut on thin wove paper, which is folded in half to create an inside page (blank). The hand-colouring is crudely executed. A bearded man sharpens scissors in the street on a portable grinding wheel operated by his right foot. Printed below the image, lower right: "Lloyd, [231, Shoreditch [190". Probably one of a series. Lloyd publishers was registered at 231 Shoreditch in 1840 and until 1843. A printed verse below: "A scissor-grinder! - what a chance: / To think with him through life I'd dance! / Your calling's such, that even a slut, / You, like your knives, would make to cut ; / Then read these lines, and ne'er opine / That you'll win me for a Valentine."
