Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
Comic Valentine. A hand-coloured lithograph on a sheet of cream laid paper. A fashionably-dressed young man wearing a large bow-tie, diagonally-striped trousers and a "wide-awake" - a hat with a low crown and very wide brim - stands in a street near an archway covered in bill posters. Two men with a horse in the background. A printed verse below: "No doubt, good Sir, that you would wish to look just like a rake! / And so you often wear that silly thing, called a 'Wide-awake: / Your coat is the Newmarket style, - one button on the breast, / and cut away in front, to show your dashing stable vest. / ... But one thing I would ask you, does your mother know you're out?" On the verso are newsprint clippings of a romantic story.
