Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
Comic Valentine. Tinted lithograph, printed in black and red ink on a long sheet of folded thin, wove paper in a format known as a 'long comic'. A grotesque image of a woman with a snake's head appearing from her mouth and a snake's body instead of legs and feet below. A printed verse below: "Old gal, I'm pretty wide awake, and I'm not going to wed a snake, / To marry thee I'd be an ass, you ugly reptile on the grass." The style and subject of this Valentine is comparable with examples held by Grosvenor Prints, 19 Shelton Street, London WC2H 9JN [http://www.grosvenorprints.com/stock.php?keyword=Valentines&WADbSearch1=Submit&cat_id=21&cat_select=488] which are dated c.1870. The theme of the Valentine as a 'snake in the grass' is seen in another example: P.14345-R-52, which shows a male figure in the role. The subject seems to have been quite common.
