Salt Valentine card

World War I Valentine. Printed at upper left: Salt [slang for sailor]. A large woodcut and lithograph printed in two colours (black and red ink) on a long sheet of folded thin, wove paper. A sailor viewed in three-quarter profile facing right. He is barefoot and holds a rope in his hands. He has tattoos of an anchor and a union flag on his right forearm. A heart is drawn near to his left hand with the message: This is / my heart. / for you. The ribbon on his cap is labelled: VICTO[RY]. HMS Victory was a Royal Navy Shore Base located in the Portsmouth area. A printed verse below: I'm thinkingofyouathomeasyousailtheoceanblue, [no spaces between words on first line] / And send you my heart by post as a token I / shall be true, / If any other chap comes cooing you need not fear, / For I'll make him keep his distance with a / clout upon the ear!
