Description

Comic Valentine. A tinted lithograph printed in two colours (black and red ink) on a long sheet of folded thin, wove paper; a format known as a 'long comic'. A grotesque image of an old woman with an oversized head, glaring eyes and down-turned mouth. She holds a bottle of GALL in her right hand and a bottle of VINEGAR in her left. There is a jug of SOUR MILK on the table. A printed verse below: You are a grumpy mean old cake, / You'd wither any flower. / There is no doubt your face would / turn / The milk of Kindness sour. The style of this Valentine suggests that it probably dates from the 1900s. Compare with P.14345-R-85 and P.14345-R-86.
