Description

An ornate, gilded lithographed border design of climbing roses, trellis and gothic fan vaulting around a central 'window' which contains a hand-coloured lithograph of a young woman in a garden, wearing a yellow bonnet and visited by a small Cupid who offers her a letter. Printed on 4to-sized, thin, ivory wove paper. A printed verse below: "Young Cupid, who flutters so gaily above, / Has feathered his arrow and barbed it with love ...". Printed along the edge of the paper at lower centre: "E. Dawe, 9 Southampton Place, New Road". The inside pages are blank. "E. Dawe" written in graphite on the album leaf to the right of P.14346-R-20. Similar inscriptions, probably in the same hand, mainly transcribing maker details, are found elsewhere on the leaves of this album and also throughout album P.14344-R. These inscriptions were made by Miss Catherine Parsons who was a close friend of Glaisher towards the end of his life and undertook to arrange and mount his valentine collection into albums from the Autumn of 1924 through to the Summer of the following year and beyond. See letters from Glaisher to Parsons in the Fitzwilliam Museum archive. E. Dawe seems to have been in production c.1841-1848.
