Description

A hand-coloured, wood engraved vignette on thin wove paper of a young woman dressed c.1830s in a landscape, a dove perched on her left hand and a couple in the background to the right walking towards a church whose steeple is visible in the distance. Printed below the image: "Published by E. LLOYD, 62, Broad Street, Bloomsbury". A printed verse below this: "I've formed with many a fragrant flower / A sweet entwining shady bower ; ...". The Museum of London holds an example of this print. See 34.170/991. The engraving is signed at lower right: PICKERING. This is likely to have been Jonathon Pickering (fl.1840s), as this would make the most sense in relation to the publishing address as stated on the print. Lloyd's domicile at 62 Broad Street, Bloomsbury dates from 1836 and is listed as one of his publishing addresses, among others. See Léger-St-Jean, Marie. Price One Penny: A Database of Cheap Literature, 1837-1860. [18 June 2015]. Faculty of English, Cambridge [29 January 2016] (http://priceonepenny.info). Publication from this address may have continued at Broad Street beyond 1839 (when he moved to 44 Holywell Street) as it has been noted that, 'Lloyd's presence at these addresses seems to have been fluid. Some may have been addresses of convenience, occupied by the newsagents who sold his publications.'. See www.edwardlloyd.org. There was another wood engraver, T. Pickering, who was working slightly later, during the 1850s. See Engen, R.K., _Dictionary of Victorian Wood Engravers_, Chadwyck-Healey, 1985, p.206. Inscriptions in graphite at upper left: "No 2 / 9d" and at upper right: "2". The inside pages are blank. From a series published by Lloyd. See also P.14346-R-31; P.14346-R-32; P.14346-R-34.
