Description

A tinted lithograph in blue, green, red, brown and gold inks on white wove paper. A lithographed roundel in gold ink decorated with stars, at the centre of which is a tinted lithograph of a woman leaning against a stone balustrade in a moonlit garden. A printed verse below: "A boat at midnight sent alone / To drift upon the moonless sea, / A lute whose leading chord is gone, / A wounded bird that hath but one ...". The verse is from Irish poet, Thomas Moore's poem, _The Love's of The Angels_ (1822). A lithographed vignette of a lute and olive branch are at upper centre. Signed on the roundel at lower centre: "E. Gilks, del & lith.". The interior is blank. As Gilks emigrated to Australia in 1852, this lithograph is most likely either to have been produced during Gilks's apprenticeship in London to Thomas Dean, between 1836-1843 or prior to 1852. P.14414-R-106 is another print of the same design in which the red ink is more intense and where there is more hand-colouring of the face and arms of the figure. From a series of lithographed valentines and valentine designs by Gilks mounted together in album P.14346-R. Other valentine designs by Gilks are contained in album P.14414-R. The Jonathan King collection at the Museum of London contains a proof of this lithograph with apparent additional hand colouring over the printed areas and with the roundel frame hand-coloured in yellow watercolour. See 34.170/356.
