Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
White paper front sheet with embossed border (as lace), the surface ingrained with dirt. A hand-coloured lithograph within the central panel; a man proposes on bended knee to a woman below a curtained archway emblazoned with a heart. A verse printed above and below the image: "O may fone love with power divine / Thy heart subdue / And make each pulse respond to mine / In beatings true." A handwritten inscription in graphite at upper centre: "c.1840". The same embossing design and arrangement of lithographed image and verse are seen in P.14346-R-45, indicating that these cards were from a series.
