Description

A 4to-sized sheet of buff-coloured paper mounted on a larger piece of white card. A hand-coloured wood-engraving of a man standing in a rural landscape, his right arm extended to received a locket on a chain bearing a portrait miniature of his beloved. The locket is carried in the beak of a dove at upper left. A church is seen in the background on the left. A verse is engraved below: "Go pretty, gentle, faithful dove / Hasten to the myrtle grove / There you'll find him I admire / Who fills my heart with chaste desire / Give him this semblance of mine / And say I am his Valentine." A hand-written graphite inscription on the card at upper left: "756", which may relate to price. A hand-written graphite inscription on the card at upper right: "c. 1830". It is possible that the number "756" relates to the lot number from the sale catalogue of bookseller, R.S. Frampton (No. 35, 1924; Valentinesarchive14) which was found among Glaisher's valentines and from which lot 756 has been cut. Many of the clippings from the Frampton catalogues were pasted onto album leaves beside the relevant albums (presumably by Catherine Parsons), but it is possible that this one was missed.
