Description

A puzzle purse and cutwork-style Valentine with lithography and hand-colouring on both sides of a square of white wove paper. Whilst not strictly a puzzle purse, the paper is designed to be folded into a small, quarter-sized square so that a lithographed design of pink roses, morning glory and forget-me-nots inside a 'lace collar' is shown on the recto. When the paper is unfolded into a larger square, the division into eight sections with diamond cutwork along the creases is apparent. On the inside of the square, each of the eight sections is illustrated with a medallion featuring an image of a young woman, sometimes with a young man, with verses to accompany: Image of man proposing to woman; "I AM THINE, / FOREVER, FOR EVER, / OH! BE / THOU MINE, / TO PART, / LOVE, / NEVER." Each medallion is framed by entwining stems and flowers. On the verso of the paper, the eight sections are titled: Love; Hope; Truth; Fidelity; Constancy; Joy and decorated with various Valentine motifs, including a bird's nest with eggs (constancy) and a dog (fidelity). Printed on the inside at the centre: ENT AT STA. HALL. / SEPT. 23. 1859. This is a notice of copyright.
