Description

A hand-coloured lithograph on pink-tinted laid paper with red edging. A vignette of a young woman in a pink dress holding a letter in her left hand and standing beside a tree. A church can be seen in the background to the left. The title below: RETURN OF HAPPINESS, printed on a scroll with an arrow inside it and a printed verse: "The heart that long in secret woe / Has borne loves arrow rankling there / Now raised by hopes deceptive glow / Now sinking into dull despair ...". The verse is bordered by the stems and flowers of the Lily of the Valley plant, with LILLY [sic] OF THE VAL[LEY] printed below the verse at lower centre, a representation of Cupid's bow obscuring some of the text. The inside pages are blank. From a series. Another example of this design printed onto yellow-tinted paper is held at the Museum of London: 34.170/936. It has been dated, 1860-1880.
